If you like your lovingkindness practice with a formal twist, you can try this Metta (lovingkindness) meditation that we use in our sitting group. I love it, and often find myself reciting it in my head on particularly tough days. May I be safe from internal and external harm May I have a calm, clear mind, and a peaceful, loving heart May I be strong, healthy, and vital and may I know love,...

This is great. It’s so easy to fall into the “I’m not good enough, I have to change myself” mode this time of year. Instead of New Year’s Resolutions that focus on what we hate about ourselves, let’s all set an intention to focus on what we love. It’s a discipline that is hard to master, when all we see every day are reasons to hate ourselves. It is good...
gertymac: notsodarling02: SIMPLY IRRESISTABLE. No surprise there that I’m over ambitious. And stubborn. Duuuh. I’m a Capricorn too. The older I get, the more Capricornish I become. Can’t lie. Even though astrology seems silly to me most of the time, I am a Cap through and through.

The Guest House
The Guest House This being human is a guest house. Every morning a new arrival. A joy, a depression, a meanness, some momentary awareness comes as an unexpected visitor. Welcome and entertain them all! Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows, who violently sweep your house empty of its furniture, still, treat each guest honorably. He may be clearing you out for some new delight. The...
Black Swan, the morning after
Thoughts on Black Swan (you should probably skip this if you haven’t seen the movie/don’t like spoilers)- Overall impression: Aronofsky is as subtle as a sledgehammer to the head. He could have gotten his point across, perhaps more effectively, using a more subtle approach. That being said, I liked this film. It was the Requiem for a Dream of the ballet world. Dark, insane, confusing, and...
Thanks! I am such a luddite when it comes to this Tumblr business.
The best toffee ever
Here is an amazing recipe from TastyKitchen.com. It is the best toffee I have ever had, as the title of this post implies. It makes an approximate shit ton of toffee, so it is perfect for holiday gifts. I just made my second batch, this time half white chocolate and half dark. I made it with fresh-churned butter from the Mennonites and it is pretty epic. And away we go! Homemade Almond Roca: 4...
Why don’t I know how to reply to people’s comments on my posts? Do I fail at Tumblr?
I am going to be a big girl and go see Black Swan tonight, despite the fact that I am afraid it’s going to be a huge trigger. I’m going with my friends and my boyfriend, so I think it should all be ok. I will write about it afterward! Prepare for some former-ballerina-mockery of the dance scenes and some former-anorexic-mockery of the eating disorder scenes!
Weak excuse for a post but here goes anyway!
I just felt compelled to share one of my favorite tricks for a quick dinner even though there is nothing groundbreaking about it: In the fuzzy photo you see a delicious Texas Toast pizza with a mixed green salad. So here’s the trick: buy the awesomely garlicky Lite Texas Toast (brand or off-brand doesn’t matter, they are all delicious.) The only difference between the full-fat and...

I just….I just love her so damn much.

I was not like the Buddha today.
Today I am reminded of the properties of Wise Speech. Too often I speak without thinking, caught up in a moment or a story that I’ve made up. I feel desperate to be heard, sometimes at the cost of others. The human need for understanding is powerful. Unfortunately, I often seek first to be understood rather than to understand. This gets me into trouble. Today I spoke in a clumsy way....
pissiechrissie asked: Hi I tried to send you a comment on jezebel when I followed you, but of course the system was a mess. I really liked your Buddhism post and your honesty. My own personal tumblr will probably be back up & running a week from now (it's finals time).
My favorite weeknight dinner
….is stir fry. My parents got a giant red electric wok for their wedding and it has belonged to me for several years. I use it almost weekly. Here’s what I do: cut up a couple of chicken breasts and marinate them in some soy sauce, a little honey or teriyaki, garlic, and some chili paste. While the chicken is marinating (it only needs 20 minutes or so), I chop up some broccoli, onions,...

A very cool Nashville food blog. A friend from my sitting group, Adam, writes here. Read his sweet post to honor the closing of Davis-Kidd bookstore.
Ryan and I went to the new Mennonite store in Charlotte, TN yesterday and stocked up on organic fresh-churned peanut butter, sourdough bread, farm fresh cheese, and rolled butter. This morning I made us egg and cheese sandwiches on toasted sourdough. I used eggs that my friend Debra brings me from her hens. Honestly, once you start eating local food it is really easy to become spoiled. I...
