Nerdy garden post
Our tomatoes have literally taken over our porch. I have never seen tomato plants this big. They are taller than I am. Proof? Crazy, right? All of the tomatoes are still green, but they are getting bigger by the day. I can’t wait to start picking them. I’ve got 4 heirloom varieties (Hillbilly, Marglobe, Mortgage Lifter, and Pruden’s Purple.) They are all blooming out of...

Illogical
I’m going on day 3 of a headache and all I wanted to do when I got home from work was sleep. So, naturally, I made a complicated dinner instead. We had a bunch of spinach that was about to turn, so I was looking up ways to use it. I found a recipe for spinach souffle and had. to. try. it. Of course it necessitated the use of approximately 8 million bowls, pans, and utensils, but...

A good choice
Today I briefly entertained the idea of going to the gym after work, but instead I went to the library then came home and baked a carrot cake. Good choice or best choice ever? I used this recipe, but cut it in half since there’s only two of us. I also increased the amount of carrots, added pecans, and used the full amount of icing because that’s. how. i. do.

Pasta e Fagioli
…actually, this is more like Bastardized Pasta e Fagioli. The classic recipe uses pancetta and no ground beef, but my boyfriend has an almost Ron Swanson-esque need for meat, so I added it in. I also stirred in a healthy serving of kale because, well, it’s good for us and delicious. Here’s what I came up with: Sort-Of Pasta Fagioli Half of a red onion, chopped 2 ribs of...

Baby birds!
Yesterday, in a flowering tree in our backyard, I discovered a birds nest with about four babies in it. I snapped a few pictures of them before mamma came back and shooed me away. They are totally cute and grumpy!

Home made chili!
It’s just ground beef, three kinds of beans (black, pinto and kidney), crushed tomatoes, chili powder, cumin, garlic, salt, pepper, and cayenne. Deceptively simple and totally delicious! P.S. I made these brownies for dessert.

Who is going to make an "Awkward Textbook Photos"...
Because I’m working on my evil, evil take-home exams for an Advanced Abnormal psych class and the pictures in this book are literally saving my sanity right now. Awkward lady standing in elevator looking scared! Awkward couple touching hands with amorous looks in their eyes! Awkward client lying on a couch in therapist’s office! (Sidenote: what therapist uses a couch anymore?...

The cutest thing ever
When I was pumping gas today a little old (white) man approached me and tapped the Obama sticker on my bumper with his cane. He squinted at me and said, “My wife and I like your bumper sticker, missy.” I thought for a second he was messing with me (I live in a really small Southern town) but he went on to say ”Bush got us into this terrible mess and now the Republicans are...

Creamy Chicken and Asparagus
Yeah, it’s good. And kind of embarrassing. Because you know what was on sale the other day that I had a sort of random desire to try? This stuff. I know, I know. It’s high in sodium and all that junk, but guess what? It’s also high in flavor. In fact, it’s effing delicious. It’s basically just Boursin cheese (which, incidentally, I am 99% sure this recipe would...

Festive
Today I made about a million star-shaped sugar cookies for a family BBQ. They were awesome. (this isn’t even the whole batch.) I don’t want to be one of those people who are all “oh, I don’t know why anyone would buy store bought cookie dough when you can make better stuff at home!” And I won’t, because these are a pain in the ass to make. The dough is...

Just For Today
July 4th- just for today Conflict Page 194 “We learn that conflicts are a part of reality, and we learn new ways to resolve them instead of running from them.” Basic Text, p. 90 From time to time, we all experience conflicts. It may be that we just can’t get along with that new co-worker. Maybe our friends are driving us crazy. Or perhaps our partner isn’t living up to our expectations....

Act V | This American Life →
“We devote this entire episode to one story: Over the course of six months, reporter and TAL contributor Jack Hitt followed a group of inmates at a high-security prison as they rehearsed and staged a production of the last act—Act V—of Hamlet.” This is my favorite This American Life, ever. I’ve listened to it a few times and it never gets dull.

Wild Geese
You do not have to be good. You do not have to walk on your knees  for a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.  You only have to let the soft animal of your body  love what it loves.  Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.  Meanwhile the world goes on.  Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain  are moving across the landscapes,  over the prairies and...

I went to an old-school roller skating party...
We had a lot of fun except for the part where Ryan bashed his head on a foosball table and began bleeding from the face. That part was not fun. But the rest of it was. The skating rink was filled with interesting characters, and I got to thinking about how they could make a really cute summer movie about the kids who work at a skating rink. It could be Wet Hot American Summer or Adventureland...
