I haven’t been too excited because this week has been super stressful and busy and I actually kind of forgot that it was happening until yesterday. I’m not sorry that I’m proud of my high school. I did not get in because my parents were rich or because we lived in a good area. In fact, we were struggling financially and almost lost our house. My father died and left us with more debt than we could ever pay.

My high school was a free arts magnet, I got in through auditioning, and it was across town from my house. It was an incredibly rigorous education, and it helped me get the scholarships I needed to be able to attend college. I worked my ass off for every single one of the six years that I attended that school, and then I worked my ass off in college and then again in grad school. And I mean literally worked- I had jobs throughout the entirety of my school career, because I had to work. Because we were not rich.

Sometimes I feel like arguing things on Tumblr but then I get exhausted just thinking about it.

This week, a Los Angeles developer announced a new smartphone app that lets shoppers scan items in their carts to see if the products are made by Koch Industries or other corporate conglomerations. Buycott (free, available on iPhone and Android) will scan the barcodes on your grocery store haul and see what major corporation it traces back to. Users can also join or create crowdsourced campaigns to avoid certain causes like GMOs or companies that donate to homophobic organizations.

Since Buycott’s release earlier this week, it has skyrocketed to No. 10 in the iTunes App Store. Creator Ivan Pardo said it’s getting more than 10 new users per second.

The idea behind the app was to let consumers “vote with their wallets” by giving them an easy way to find out who’s behind their household goods. Companies such as Chick-fil-A and Papa John’s have felt both the wrath and support of consumers after publicly supporting right-wing causes. The CEO of Starbucks encouraged people who are against same-sex marriage to sell their stock in his company.
